For Parents and Competitors – What to Expect, How to Prepare, and How to Show Up Strong

This guide is here to help parents and kids prepare mentally, emotionally, and physically. At Purebred, we believe competition is one of the best ways for your child to grow—not just as an athlete, but as a person.

FOR COMPETITORS (KIDS):

🧠 MINDSET FIRST

  • Nerves are GOOD! Feeling nervous before your match? That’s normal—and it’s actually a superpower. It means you care. It keeps you sharp. Embrace the butterflies.

  • Think Attitude, Effort, Aggressiveness, and Gratitude. That’s our mindset. That’s what we control.

    • Attitude: Go into every match with a positive, winning attitude. Win or lose, stay positive, respectful, and humble.

    • Effort: Give 100% in every match, every exchange.

    • Aggressiveness: Be first. Go after your techniques. Push the pace with your game plan. Keep the intensity high!

    • Gratitude: Be thankful. Thank your parents, your coaches, the refs, and even your opponents. Competing is a privilege.

🧩 GAME PLAN

  • Work with your coaches this week on what positions you feel most confident in—top, bottom, guard, takedowns. Know what to do if you’re winning. Know what to do if you’re losing. Be ready to adapt.

  • You don’t need a million moves—just 1-2 solid go-to techniques that you’ve practiced from all positions. Stick to what you’ve trained.

🎯 WHAT TO EXPECT ON COMP DAY

  • Matches move fast. Brackets can change. You might be called quickly or wait a while. Be ready, stay warmed up, stay focused.

  • Listen for your name. Coaches will be there, but stay alert.

  • When it’s time to step on the mat—breathe, slap, bump, and give it everything you got.

FOR PARENTS:

💡 BEFORE THE TOURNAMENT

  • Talk with your child about their game plan. Help them visualize what to do in different situations. Keep it simple, calm, and encouraging.

  • Make sure they eat something light and healthy. Hydrate. Get good sleep the night before.

  • Go over expectations—focus on growth, effort, and learning rather than just medals.

🏟️ ON TOURNAMENT DAY

  • Show up early. Check the schedule and mat assignments.

  • Bring snacks (something light and on the healthier side. Fruits, sandwiches, granola bars, etc) , water, and something for your child to stay calm and entertained while waiting (book, headphones, etc.).

  • Support, don’t coach. Let the instructors give technical guidance during the matches. Your job is to cheer, encourage, and be a calm, steady presence.

🧠 WHAT TO REMEMBER AS A PARENT

  • Nerves are normal—for you and your child. Try not to show fear or stress. Kids take their cues from you.

  • Results don’t define your child. Whether they win all matches or none—they’re growing, learning, and getting better.

  • We’re here for them, win or lose. We love them, we support them, and we’ll keep showing up.

  • Please celebrate effort, sportsmanship, and heart. That’s what lasts.

❤️ THE PUREBRED PROMISE

No matter what happens on that mat—win, lose, tap, or medal—we’re proud of every single one of our kids. If they walk off the mat giving their best, we celebrate them.

Every tournament is a chance to build confidence, character, and courage. When your child competes with attitude, effort, aggressiveness, and gratitude, they’ll walk away having fun and feeling proud—no matter the outcome.
